“Still, the first duty of a knight is to make the realm shine in the dreams of small boys — or where else will the knights of tomorrow arise, and what will become of the realm?” ― Elminster
The name “Faerûn” originates from “Faerie,” the ancient homeland of the elves, coined by Prince Durothil of Tintageer. The continent featured diverse terrain, with the Sea of Fallen Stars as its most prominent feature, an inland sea that sustained fertile lands, connected east and west regions, and facilitated trade.
Other significant regions included the Shaar grasslands and the Lake of Steam in the south, the steppes of Kara-Tur in the east, glaciers and tundra in the north, and the sub-tropical land of Zakhara beyond the Great Sea to the south.
Waterdeep is located on the west coast of Faerûn, on what is considered the Sword Coast.
