“Though it may seem as if all Waterdeep rushes and bustles about with eyes and minds only for their own business at hand, it profits everyone to always remember that part of their business is watching what is unfolding around them, without seeming to, in hopes of seizing on the next big thing, the next road to riches. Even if only to sneer, Waterdeep always watches.” — Largreth the Good Knight
This interactive map shows all the places in Waterdeep. The Yawning Portal is located off Cook St., east of Castle Waterdeep.
Waterdeep, known as the City of Splendors or the Crown of the North, is one of the most important and influential cities in Faerûn. Renowned for its culture, it attracted talented artisans, artists, and scholars, while serving as a major commercial hub. It was also a key member of the Lords’ Alliance, a coalition dedicated to maintaining order along the Sword Coast and the North.
Who’s in Charge of this Place?
The Open Lord is a woman named Laeral Silverhand. She is one of the famed Seven Sisters and a Chosen of Mystra, goddess of magic. Lady Silverhand is a wise, confident, and respected ruler – her tactical and political savvy was vital in helping defeat Tiamat and the Cult of the Dragon.
Upper vs. Lower Class
The city’s upper class live in comfort in the North Ward and the Castle Ward, enjoying the luxuries of fine food, comfortable beds, and the protection of an attentive City Watch. Far beneath the cliffs live the wretched of Waterdeep. Criminal forces such as the Zhentarim and the Xanathar Guild take advantage of these poor folk.
The Undermountain
The city of Waterdeep was built atop the ruins of Undermountain, and the Yawning Portal was constructed over its only remaining entrance.
“Undermountain? Ah, yes. A great place to have fun, the most famous battlefield in which to earn a reputation as a veteran adventurer — and the largest known mass grave in Faerûn today.” — Elminster
